HEARING AND VISION SCREENING

  • Target Audience: Ages 3 - 5 years old, enrolled in a Madison County daycare or preschool.
  • For more information, please call (618) 692-8954 ext. 2, Diane McCullough, LPN (618) 296-6064.
  • School-age children are screened as requested by the school for a fee.  This screening does not replace an exam by the eye doctor or audiologist.
  • We do not currently offer hearing and vision screening for adults.

Description

The hearing and vision nurses visit each daycare and pre-school in Madison County to screen (with signed parental consent) children ages 3, 4, and 5. If a child fails a screening test, the nurse may return at a future date to re-screen the child and the child's parent may be contacted. If the child fails the re-screen test, the child will be referred to his/her physician for further testing.

Madison County Health Department (MCHD) started screenings in the 2001-2002 school year. During that year 2,809 children were screened for vision and 2,871 were screened for hearing. Forty-six children were referred for further testing.  In the latest school year 2016-2017, MCHD screened 2401 children for vision and 2454 for hearing.  Thirty-six children were referred for further testing.

Benefits

The goal of this screening program is to identify hearing and/or vision problems. Early identification of problems and referral to an appropriate health care provider can reduce life-long sensory deficits.
