County Administrator

As County Administrator, Dave Tanzyus holds more than 30 years of experience at all levels in government.

Dave believes his experience gave him a front row seat to view how all levels of government are interdependent in delivering services. It also provided many situations to bring various groups together for a common goal.

His background in government-related employment includes: serving as district director for U.S. Rep. Mike Bost; managing the southern region of Illinois Comptroller’s Local Debt Recovery Program under Judy Baar Topinka; and working for the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services and on the (then) federally-funded Comprehensive Child Development Program.

Dave’s experience also includes serving as an appointed Bi-State Development Board (Metro) member for two terms from May 1998 to January 2007 and as an elected Collinsville Area Recreation District board member for six years from May 2011 to May 2017.

His first role with Madison County Government was administrator of Community Development. He served from January to May 2021 before being appointed to his current position.

As County Administrator, Dave coordinates and implements the actions of the County Board, directs the day-to-day operation of county facilities, programs and personnel and provides staff support to the County Board in policy-making. The County Administrator acts as staff advisor to the County Board chair for the overall management of all County Board departments, provides administration and management oversight, and coordinates county operations.

Dave earned a Bachelor’s degree in history from Oral Roberts University and a Master of Arts in communications from Lindenwood University.

In business, Dave has been a part of two start-up companies, purchased two small businesses and spent time managing branches for a major bank. These experiences allowed him to develop leadership traits, which enabled him to grow professionally and in his personal life. Early in his work career, one company failed, giving him many valuable lessons he brought forward to his other ventures.

In his personal life, Dave spent many years coaching basketball at the high school AAU and college levels including working as an assistant men’s basketball coach at Lindenwood University and as head basketball coach for St. Louis Christian College. Prior to basketball, he served the community by taking on leadership roles with service clubs and a local food pantry.
